    Which course should I take?

Let's talk about the Learn to Sail course first, because this is where you learn the skills and foundation for sailing any size boat. You should take this course if you:

    • Never sailed before
    • Have sailed, but only as crew or passenger
    • Haven't sailed for a while and know you're a bit rusty
    • Have sailed and steered, but only on small dinghy-type boats
    • Sail quite often, but need to build knowledge and confidence

"I have been sailing for 20 years and felt that the learn to sail course was well worth my time."
Roger Byler, Topeka, KS

"Marjie did the Learn to Sail course in May 2000, and was so impressed with the location and staff that she is returning for the bareboat certification, and David (husband) wants to join her with the Learn to Sail course." Dave and Marjie Westby, Littleton, CO

Can I bring my family or friends along during a course or on the practice sail if they aren't enrolled in a course?

No, this is not recommended as we are “all business” while teaching and want students to depend on each other on the practice sail without distractions - it's a serious step to graduation and part of the course.

This is where you put it all together and, frankly, nearly everyone goes out with a bit of trepidation in their veins. But the reward is the satisfaction felt when it all comes together - without the instructor aboard. It just wouldn't be prudent to put people aboard who hadn't had any preparation for sailing on our boats in the waters you learned in. Why not get them to take the course with you?

"I enjoyed every moment of my Learn to Sail class. I had a great time and at the same time learned a lot. I feel completely confident in my skills on the water and I have Offshore to thank!" Hannah Vogler, New York, NY

Will I get books in advance to study before I arrive for the course?

Yes! In fact, you will get a full packet of information that should answer all your questions about where to be when, what to bring and what you should know in advance.  In addition to your US SAILING textbook(s) for the course(s) you are enrolled in, every student gets a very special textbook written by the Colgates especially for the course you are in. No other sailing school gives you the wealth of knowledge that you’ll have for a lifetime from Offshore!
